October, the month of spooky Halloween parties and awesome costumes, is also time to acknowledge breast cancer and its survivors. At Saint Maur, the school community actively participated in various initiatives to support this significant cause throughout the month.

One instance is that by the start of the month, students were wearing pink ribbons on their shirts in support of breast cancer victims. These ribbons were crafted by the Service Learning Club, led by Ms. Mansson, and served as a strong acknowledgement to the month of awareness.

Furthermore, Saint Maur high school students Amane, Jenny, Kasumi, and Rita (G12) contributed by starting a “Pinktober Charity,” where the students collected funds through selling pink snacks outside of the Cougar Cafe. The main initiator of this project, Amane, was inspired to spread awareness for this cause, as she “has family members who are affected by [breast cancer].” Additionally, Amane explained s she chose to sell pink items, as “pink is the main theme colour for breast cancer awareness, so the pink snacks was just in reference to that.” She also stated: “Having pink snacks, I think, just makes people wonder] ‘What’s that, why is it pink, where did you get that?’” The unique products the students chose to sell definitely intrigued the school community, as the Pinktober Charity has raised over ¥15,000, and will be continuing to sell their products through November. The pink snacks were able to simultaneously spread awareness about breast cancer, and directly support the cause through the funds which will be sent to RFTC-Japan, an organisation that focuses on teaching people about breast cancer and helping those who suffered.

Overall, Breast Cancer Awareness month at Saint Maur showed that even small actions, like wearing a pink ribbon or buying a pink snack, can contribute to raising awareness and supporting important causes. Be sure to check out the Pinktober Charity stand in the Cougar Cafe, and continue to educate yourself on the causes and impacts of breast cancer.
