On January 27th, Friday morning, on the final day of the Montessori\u00a0International Week, the parents\u00a0dressed\u00a0their children in\u00a0costumes representing\u00a0countries from around the world, and enjoyed viewing the student-and-teacher parade\u00a0held in our Upper Rec Hall. This was taken in front of our permanent continent map.<\/p>\n

\"\"Students and faculty from all over the world, from different continents, help define Saint Maur as an international school. \u00a0In the\u00a0spirit of “communication and collaboration,” we organize\u00a0International Week for the Montessori School once a year, celebrate\u00a0and discover\u00a0more about our diversity.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Throughout the week, starting from January 23rd, Monday, the children in\u00a0each Montessori class had\u00a0the\u00a0chance\u00a0to focus on\u00a0their\u00a0classmates’ countries, as moms and dads came to make\u00a0presentations on their home countries. The following were our week-long, parent-led discoveries.<\/p>\n

FRANCE:<\/strong> \u00a0Two French moms baked some “Galette de Roi” at home for us to taste\u00a0in the classroom. \u00a0This French cake is traditionally shared on\u00a0the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, which\u00a0celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men to view the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. \u00a0The children\u00a0made crowns to\u00a0become kings and queens. \u00a0The moms\u00a0served\u00a0their home-made treat, and four lucky winners found a figurine inside to\u00a0be chosen as the official kings and queens.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

ENGLAND:<\/strong> A\u00a0mom from England came to talk about the\u00a0country’s climate, food, songs, transportation system, and so much more. The children\u00a0had a chance to taste a special “mess dessert” made of meringue and fresh strawberries with cream. Ummmm. \u00a0\u00a0The children also made their own double-decker bus.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

CANADA:<\/strong>\u00a0 The children\u00a0listened to two stories about Canada in a presentation by a Canadian dad, then played a game in\u00a0assembling the national animal, the beaver. It was a lot of fun. \u00a0They also learned about the different native animals, popular sports, and the geography of this\u00a0big North American country.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

INDIA:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two Indian moms\u00a0read us a native\u00a0story, then brought out\u00a0a big poster to explain\u00a0about the indigenous\u00a0animals and food, Mahatma Ghandi, the rupee, native costumes, and other fascinating facts about India.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

And, as a finale, three of our\u00a0Indian friends in Montessori performed an Indian dance for us in their beautiful native costumes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

ROMANIA:<\/strong>\u00a0Dressed in Romanian traditional tops of\u00a0red and white colors, a\u00a0mom and her daughter explained about their language, geography, dance, songs, and more. \u00a0Did you know that the shape of the country of Romania looks like a “fish”? \u00a0We colored in the outline of the country as a fish, or the colors of the national flag of Romania in blue, yellow, and red.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

CHINA:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0We learned about the Chinese New Year’s, the Year of the Rooster in 2017. \u00a0To celebrate, we all received paper-cutting designs to put up on the wall and windows. The mom made Chinese dumplings in the morning and let us have a taste. Some children tried it for the first time. \u00a0They were hesitant at first, but when they had a bite, they\u00a0loved \u00a0it!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

We appreciate all the moms and dad who took the time to prepare and share their presentations of their countries with the children. \u00a0Thank you for a\u00a0 great time!<\/p>\n

Do you know the mandara? \u00a0The children received a card each from the Indian moms to color it the way they liked.<\/p>\n

Look how beautiful they are! \u00a0All original!\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In the afternoon on Friday, the 27th, the whole school, from Montessori to High School, got together to think about the theme of Kindness and Empathy. \u00a0They split into different groups\u00a0and played various games. \u00a0Through this experience, the children learned about kindness, empathy, and tolerance for all people of all cultures, religions and genders. \u00a0For example, some of the games that they played were the Lion Game, Human Knots, Air Traffic Controller, and Common Ground. The games were all related to the Declaration of Human Rights.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Lion game and the Human Knots Game with students from Montessori to Grade 12, cooperating and having fun together.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On\u00a0the following Monday, January 30th, all the\u00a0Montessori classes got together in the afternoon. \u00a0It was a joint Daily 5 and Language Arts class, and the children brain-stormed about the games they had played, and what they had learned. \u00a0They talked about how we can be kind and show sympathy. These are the hands of all the Montessori children; we try to use kind words and show empathy in what we\u00a0say and in what we do.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0poster was made by\u00a0the Montessori children after our discussion on Empathy and Kindness. \u00a0It is displayed in\u00a0the entranceway of the Montessori building.<\/p>\n
