We survived 100 days of school!

Thank you to all families who came in to see us on Monday for the Student-Led Conferences. We enjoyed showing off our learning with you.


On Friday the class celebrated their 100th day of school!

This is what we might look like when we are 100 years old!



We loved receiving our Valentine’s Day cards from our secret student on Thursday!



The class started a new unit in Maths by completing the pre-assessment for Unit 6. We recorded down different ways to make ten and shared the different combinations.  We played Three Towers of Ten with a partner as well as a new game called Make 10 where we had to find two cards that combine to make 10. During the week, we also worked on solving story problems and shared strategies that helped us to solve it.




In Writers’ Workshop this week we continued to use all we learned last week to write our reviews. We referred to the editing checklist to give our reviews a ‘checkup’ ensuring our writing is easy to read. We then practiced reading our writing with a partner, making sure our tone is persuasive.

We had the chance to put together anthologies of pieces that go together. In groups, we came up with a catchy title for our anthology and designed a front cover.

Each group shared their anthology giving a little ‘commercial’ to convince everyone to read it.

To celebrate, we placed our writing in a new basket in the classroom library labelled ‘1G Reviews’.




In Readers’ Workshop we learned that readers only slow down to read a word when the have to. Instead they read most of the words in their books in a snap and keep going, making their reading as smooth as it can be. With a reading buddy, we watched out for words we knew and could read quickly checking if it’s a snap word. We also each used a copy of the chart to reflect on the strategies we have learned and set a goal for ourselves.

We started a new chart called ‘Tools for Understanding Our Books’. We learned that we work hard to understand the books we are reading by rereading to figure out how everything fits together and then checking if we are getting it. Another tool readers use to understand their books is their imagination. We pay full attention to what’s happening and imagine more than just what’s in the pictures. With a partner, we had a chance to act out scenes from a book to understand what is happening.

This week the class was busy preparing and practicing for the Student-Led Conferences. We look forward to showing you all of our amazing work on Monday 11th February!


On Monday it was BEAUTIFUL weather so we went to the park with 1P. It was a lot of fun!



In Writers’ Workshop we learned that writers write introductions to grab the reader’s attention. One way to do this is to ask questions, name your topic and then tell your opinion. We learned that review writers include important information (what your topic is, where to find it and when to go/how to play) to convince readers.

Sometimes including a small moment story in persuasive reviews can make writing even more convincing. We added small moments to our writing. We also made sure to tell the reader to do something at the end of our review writing.



In Readers’ Workshop we learned that readers can use words they know to read words they don’t know. When you are stuck on a word you can think, “do I know how to read or write a word that looks like this one?” We looked at using known words to help make connections to new or unknown words.

We were reminded that vowels can make two sounds and that some sounds are sneaky because they don’t look the way they sound.

We practiced the strategy; ‘try it many ways.’ The class went on a word hunt for sneaky sounds in our books and added them to a class chart.



In Maths we were shown eight different tapes placed on the floor that were of different distances. We predicted the lengths and used ‘kid steps’, using our feet, to measure and record the length of two tapes confirming which one is longer.

The class also investigated if the size of a person’s foot might lead to different measurements. We used different units (steps of a baby, basketball player and craft sticks) to measure three different tapes and compared the measurements.

We also measured how far different animals, including a first grader, can jump and solved combining and comparing word problems. Finally, we completed the post-assessment for Unit 5. Great work!



In the PC Lab this week we went on Typing Club. We learned to touch-type letters ‘f’, ‘j’, ‘d’, ‘k’, ‘s’, ‘l’ and even some more. We tried hard to type using all fingers, without looking at the keyboard.



In Art this week the class made their own Valentine’s day cards for someone in the Elementary School. Next week, on February 14th, we will give and receive our cards.



On Wednesday everyone enjoyed their second class reward!

Hello February

On Tuesday we had a special visitor called Kathryn Claire, a musician, come to Grade 1 for some sing-a-longs.


This week in Writers’ Workshop we continued opinion writing. We then prepared all of our writing for a ‘Best in Show’ celebration. We checked our opinion writing pieces so far and made sure they were easy to read and included the criteria from the checklist.

We entered our writing in a ‘competition’, choosing two pieces of writing. We acted as a judge and went around to help choose which of the two is the best. Some of us shared our best piece with the class.

We then learned that there are people whose job it is to play video games or eat at restaurants and then write a review. The class started a new type of opinion writing called review writing. We each chose a topic for review e.g. a game, movie, toy, restaurant, vacation.




In Readers’ Workshop we learned that when readers check the picture it is not always enough to solve a word. Readers also think about what is happening in the story to help them figure out what word would make sense. We learned that reading partners don’t just help each other fix up tricky words, they also help each other keep track of what’s happening in a book. We practiced retelling big events in a story.

Readers listen carefully as they read to consider what word might come next. We learned to solve an unknown word by stopping and thinking about the kind of word that would sound right. We also learned that as the books we choose get harder, some words also get hard, but we can slow down and look at all the parts of a word and read it part by part.




In Math we started the unit by measuring various objects using connecting cubes. We compared measurements and made decisions about how to record a measurement that is in between whole numbers of cubes.

We also practiced measuring objects using tiles and paper clips and discussed our measuring techniques. We listened to a story about a girl who makes a number of measurement errors and had to identify and correct the errors. We had to measure the lengths of fish in inches to determine which one met the specific length requirements.

The class worked together on a story problem about fish. We worked on developing measurement techniques and solving comparison problems. Finally, we all invented a new fish, making a keeper of our own.

Busy January

In Writers’ Workshop we learned that when you write something, it is important to understand the kind of writing you are doing and to figure out ways people do that writing really well. We looked at a piece of writing and compared it to the opinion writing checklist. We all set a goal referring to the checklist of what we need to work on next.

We put out our ‘Best in Show’ choice from our collection and walked around to have a look at each other’s. We discovered that we sometimes can disagree and have different opinions. We had the chance to write an opinion about another classmate’s collection.

Sometimes people who are experts on a topic, who collect a lot of information about a topic, write to convince others of what they believe is worst in their collections giving reasons why. We all wrote about a least favorite piece in our own collection. Lastly, we learned that in order to be even more convincing we can get help from people who agreed with us and add quotes from ‘experts’.



In Readers’ Workshop we learned that readers do a ‘triple check’ asking themselves ‘Does it make sense?, Does it look right?, Does it sound right?’

Readers who are in charge of their reading think ‘what do I do a lot? and ‘what can I do even more?’ and they make a plan to be the best they can be. Referring to our word-solving chart we named some strategies that we use all the time and jotted down one strategy to make a plan for how we’ll push ourselves to use more strategies when we get stuck on a tricky word. We shared our reading goals with the class.

We learned that sometimes even bosses need to help solve problems and that people need to work together to solve hard problems. We observed good partnership in action and read with a reading partner helping each other when we needed it. On Thursday we showed off our reading with 3RB buddies!




In Art we completed a birch tree picture exploring shadows, lighting and colors. We used different sizes of masking tape for the birch trees and painted the sky with watercolors. Then we carefully peeled off the tape and added markings on the trees.



In Maths we completed our last survey; choosing a question we wanted to investigate with two possible answers, collected the data from our classmates. We shared our results with the class. This week marked the end of Unit 4. Well-done! We also completed the pre-assessment for Unit 5.



In SWI we investigated the question ‘How many sounds does the <c> grapheme make?’ We found so many! This week, we also learned about digraphs.



On Tuesday morning Ms. Yamada had us for Readers’. We earned a wacky reward….can you guess what it was?

New Me, Fun Me

In Writers’ Workshop we were introduced to opinion writing and completed a pre on-demand performance assessment. We thought of a topic and wrote an opinion text in which we stated our opinions and gave reasons why we felt that way.

We learned that people who keep collections often think about what their favorite is and tell their opinions and maybe even convince others about their opinions. We got to look at Ms Gerken’s magnet collection and decided which is our favorite. We shared our own collections with the class.

Each of us got to function as a judge, learning how to make fair decisions and choose a winner by giving reasons. We learned that when you have an opinion, when you judge something, you need to give a couple of reasons, not just one, and say details about each reason.



In Readers’ Workshop we learned that when readers are the boss of their reading, one of their jobs is to stop at the first sign of trouble and to try something using all we know.

We learned to take charge of our reading and do everything it takes to figure out the hard parts. We practiced using more than one strategy to solve the tricky parts.




In Maths, we reviewed the correct way of using tally marks as a way to help and make it easier to count. With a partner, we got to do our own survey with the class, deciding on a question that has 2 possible responses. We made a plan for collecting data.

Then we asked the questions and recorded our class mates’ responses. We used our information collected from our survey question and made a representation of the data to show what we found out.

We also made a representation of how old children in our class are and talked about the representation. Lastly, we created a representation showing the ages of us and our siblings.

Happy New Year!

The class started the week off writing New Year’s Resolutions. We all thought of some goals we want to set for ourselves for the year 2019.


In Writers’ Workshop we continued writing our nonfiction chapter books. We were reminded of the craft moves, like pop-out words and speech bubbles, from Unit 1, that writers use to give more information or to make some information stand out. We revisited our work to see if we might use craft moves in our writing.

We played an editing checklist game with a partner where we had to check off an item (e.g. vowels in every word) and make changes to our work as needed. We decided what part of our book we would like to share with the class and practiced reading using our best teaching voice.

We then self-assessed our work using the Information Writing Checklist.

Finally, we set up a museum exhibit to celebrate our writing! We have not only become nonfiction writers, we’ve all become teachers! We learned how to teach others with our writing; by writing a lot of interesting details, by making pictures into teach pictures and by putting information into chapters. We can all be very proud of ourselves!



In Readers’ Worksop we learned that it’s important to check in with your audience when reading to make sure they are with you and understand the information you are sharing. With a reading buddy, we always checked for understanding, pointing to pictures, asking questions or re-reading parts. We continued using post-it notes to remember where to stop and what to talk about.

We also had a chance to use drama to bring the topic to life. It was a lot of fun!

The class celebrated all they have learned in Unit 2 about ‘How to get Super Smart about Nonfiction Topics’ and ‘How to Read Aloud like an Expert’ with 1P.



In Maths the class completed a pre-assessment for Unit 4. The class was introduced to Quick Surveys; an activity that provides students with several opportunities throughout the unit to collect, record and discuss data and to see a variety of data representations.

We discussed sorting shapes and buttons. We decided how to organize and sort the attributes of shapes and buttons and made representations of how the objects can be sorted.

The class played Guess My Rule, placing 2 buttons that fit and 2 that don’t fit a rule we picked. We also used power polygons.

We also played Guess My Rule with People. It was fun! We made a representation to show the results of one of the rules: ‘Students wearing grey sweaters’.

Finally, we completed a survey about whether we would rather be eagles or whales and made a representation of the data.



In Art the class completed an optical illusions picture. We followed a step by step process to create an optical illusion of falling down a tube.

Christmas is coming!

We did a lot of fun Christmas activities this week. We created a word web for ‘Christmas’ and brainstormed words that have to do with the holiday. We talked about which words are compound words, which words can have a suffix and we practiced tapping out words too.

We wrote a letter to Santa, put it in an envelope and addressed it to Santa Claus. We hope we get what we have asked for!

The class was also introduced to poetry. We wrote Christmas acrostic and shape poems.

The class also enjoyed making a Christmas card.



This week we also completed our MAP testing for Reading and Maths in the PC Lab.


On Thursday we had a surprise leaving party for Jennifer!

On Friday we opened our Secret Santa presents, enjoyed a yummy potluck lunch (Thank you parents!) and watched a Christmas movie.
