January 23rd

First off. Thank you everyone for the wonderful International Day! The food was wonderful; company was awesome and the speakers were fantastic!! It will definitely be a day the kids remember. I have uploaded (a lot) of pictures and some videos here.

Remember they should have 3 days of doing their word work activities, it would be great to get them writing at least a few sentences for their new words to help them build stamina during writing time.

IPC – We finished learning about all 5 food groups and the kids are doing great, feel free to ask them which food groups they enjoy and what they should be eating everyday.

Writing – We are still working on our non-fiction chapter book, and have chosen a topic to write about and are working on creating topics for each chapter.

Have a nice relaxing weekend, and again THANK YOU!

Week of January 16th

International day is next week.
We would be happy if you would be able come in and do a short presentation about your culture.
Kids will come to school in cultural dress (and stay in cultural dress all day if they would like), and will have a parade from 8:30-8:55 where parent can also come and take pictures.
We will be having a breakfast or lunch potluck in our room (will let you know what time on Monday). If possible it would be great to try foods and snacks from your home countries!!!

Here is the link for teach your monster to read http://tinyurl.com/tymtr1p all they need is their name to log in.

We are still collecting PET bottle caps for student council, please feel free to send them in whenever possible.

Reading
This week in reading we focused on new reading strategies such as “crashing words together” sh-ar-k = shark! We also focused on slow down and double check, once we crash together we read it slowly to double check the letter sounds.
We also focused on picking out the keywords in non fiction book. Example a book about leave has the words “tree, sun, autumn”.

Writing
We are working on our chapter books still and expanding on our ideas. We are learning how to organize our information by categorising it into different strategies.

IPC
The kids have been doing AWESOME while learning about the different food groups, feel free to ask them what food groups they are eating at meal times.

Math
Please make sure to bring your child’s signed math test if you did not today.
Also make sure to check the math section of our blog to learn about our new unit as well as what things you can do at home to reinforce learning at home.

FUN DAY
Took a bunch of pictures that are posted below 😀

First week back!! Welcome 2017

Welcome back!!!!! Hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break.

Math
We have been working on counting to numbers up to 100+
The kids have been loving it and love doing things with big numbers now.

Reading
We talked about looking at table of contents and finding the different main topics in non-fiction books.

Writing
We have been working on organizing our non-fiction books and picking main ideas to add to our table of contents.
If possible it would be great to ask them about their writing and what topic they chose.

Reminders
Children NEED to practice their word work works at least 3x a week. They should also at least take out their journal and just read through the list 1-3 times. Getting them to notice letter and sound patterns is very important at the moment and need as much practice as they can get.
